Police Arrest Suspect Over GH¢430,000 Robbery At Buipe Cattle Market

The Savannah Regional Police Command has made a breakthrough in its investigation into the GH¢430,000 robbery at the Buipe Cattle Market, arresting a 28-year-old man believed to be connected to the attack.

The robbery happened on June 29, 2026, when two Mobile Money vendors at the cattle market were attacked by a group of armed men.

According to the police, the attackers were heavily armed with two pump-action guns, a single-barrel gun and an AK-47 rifle. They reportedly fired several shots before escaping with about GH¢430,000 belonging to the vendors.

The seriousness of the incident prompted the Inspector-General of Police to deploy personnel from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit to support the Savannah Regional Police Command in tracking down those behind the attack.

28-year-old suspect arrested

After weeks of surveillance and intelligence work, police arrested Yacouba Oumar, 28, at Soronuase in the Bono East Region on July 23.

The arrest was carried out by the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and the Police Intelligence Directorate, with support from the Kintampo Divisional Police Command.

Police say Oumar admitted taking part in the robbery during interrogation.

He allegedly identified other members of the group as Yakubu Seidu alias Baba, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya alias Addo, and Abduli Buipe alias Addo.

According to the police account, Oumar also told investigators that the group had allegedly been contracted by a cattle trader at the Buipe market identified as Alhaji Yacouba, also known as Masaji, Muimen or Yakubu.

The allegation remains part of an ongoing police investigation and has not been independently established.

Police encounter alleged robbery suspects

The investigation later took police teams to several locations, including Atebubu, Soronuase, Agogo and Dawadawa, as officers continued the search for other suspected members of the group.

Police say an operation eventually resulted in an exchange of gunfire between officers and the suspects.

Three alleged members of the syndicate — Yakubu Seidu, Abdulai Aziz Yahaya and Oumaro Amadu — were killed during the encounter.

Their bodies have since been deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police also recovered a pump-action gun, five live BB cartridges and a single-barrel gun, which investigators believe may have been used during the Buipe robbery.

Police continue search for other suspects

Yacouba Oumar remains in police custody and is assisting investigators as the case develops.

The police are also continuing efforts to locate Alhaji Yacouba and other individuals believed to be connected to the robbery.

For residents and traders in Buipe, the case has attracted particular attention because the robbery happened at the town's well-known cattle market and involved a significant amount of money.

The latest arrest is expected to help investigators piece together how the robbery was planned, who else may have been involved and what happened to the stolen money.
