Tanoso Chief Handed to Police Over Alleged Galamsey Involvement

A traditional leader in Tanoso in the Tano North Municipality of the Ahafo Region has been handed over to the police after residents accused him of involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

The chief, Nana Amoako Atta, Ankobeahene of the Tanoso Traditional Area, was reportedly apprehended by community members on Sunday before being handed over to the police for investigation.

The development has attracted significant attention because the person at the centre of the allegations is a traditional leader, while the community has been battling the effects of illegal mining on the Tano River.

According to reports, residents had suspected the chief of involvement in illegal mining activities but said they had previously lacked what they considered sufficient evidence.

What Happened in Tanoso?

According to a report by MyJoyOnline, community members allegedly caught Nana Amoako Atta transporting sacks containing mineral-bearing stones and sand from an illegal mining site to his palace.

The report said the chief claimed ownership of the materials.

Residents subsequently detained him and handed him over to the police.

The allegations have not been proven in court, and the police investigation will determine the facts surrounding the case.

Youth Demand Accountability

The arrest followed growing frustration among residents over the impact of illegal mining on the community's environment.

Speaking at a press conference in Tanoso on Monday, August 17, youth leader Abdul Razak Iddriss said residents had long suspected the traditional leader but only recently believed they had obtained evidence.

He said the community's action was driven by concerns about the continued destruction of the Tano River.

Residents have also called on authorities to ensure that the matter is handled through the proper legal process and that no attempt is made to settle the case outside the justice system.

Tano River Already Under Pressure

The incident comes against the backdrop of worsening concerns about illegal mining in the Tano North area.

In May, residents of Tanoso told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that pollution from illegal mining had deteriorated the Tano River to the point where it could no longer be relied upon for normal domestic use.

Some residents said they had been forced to depend on sachet water for drinking and household activities because of the condition of the river.

The Ahafo Regional Security Council has also previously carried out anti-galamsey operations in the Tano North Municipality, including an operation at Adagyamemu during which five excavators and other mining equipment were seized.

Police Take Over Investigation

Police officials have confirmed the arrest, according to MyJoyOnline.

The chief was reportedly transferred to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Duayaw-Nkwanta, with assistance from the Ahafo Regional Police Command, to prevent possible local interference while investigations continue.

The case has therefore moved from community action to the formal justice system, where investigators are expected to establish whether the allegations against the traditional leader are supported by evidence.

For residents of Tanoso, however, the incident highlights a much wider concern: the struggle to protect the Tano River and other natural resources from illegal mining.

A Bigger Question for Tanoso

The dramatic decision by residents to hand over a traditional leader to the police reflects the growing frustration in communities affected by galamsey.

It also raises questions about the responsibilities of traditional authorities, community members and state security agencies in protecting Ghana's rivers and forests.
