BREAKING: Multiple People Feared Dead in Major Ofankor Crash, Rescue Operation Ends

ACCRA, Ghana — A major road crash at the Ofankor Barrier on the Accra–Kumasi Highway has left multiple people dead and several others injured, triggering an emergency rescue operation and causing severe traffic disruption on Thursday morning, August 13, 2026.

The crash occurred at about 4:00 a.m. on the express lane of the N6 highway, on the stretch from Pokuase towards Achimota.

Early reports from the scene indicated that several vehicles were involved, including two tipper trucks, a Sprinter/minibus and a tricycle. The collision left the Sprinter severely mangled, trapping passengers inside.

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), together with the police, responded to the scene to rescue victims and maintain order.

Death toll still developing

There are differing early reports about the number of people who died.

Graphic Online reported at least eight deaths, citing information from the GNFS, while Citi Newsroom initially reported five confirmed deaths. Other reports said the final casualty figure had not yet been established while rescue operations were underway.

Global Pulse GH is therefore not treating any single figure as the final death toll until it is formally confirmed by the relevant authorities.

The crash was severe enough to trap several passengers inside the damaged vehicle.

One female victim was reportedly transported from the scene by ambulance after suffering extremely serious injuries.

Rescue operation completed

A subsequent update from the scene indicated that GNFS personnel had successfully extricated the people trapped inside the Sprinter, while the bodies of those who died had also been retrieved.

The injured victims were transported to health facilities for emergency treatment.

Emergency personnel have since been working to clear the wreckage and create a passage for vehicles using the affected section of the highway.

Major traffic disruption

The crash has also created significant congestion around the Ofankor Barrier.

Police have redirected traffic onto the outer service lane to allow emergency personnel to operate safely at the crash scene.

The GNFS has urged motorists travelling from Pokuase and Amasaman towards Ofankor and Accra to use the outer lane and exercise extreme caution while approaching the area.

Motorists have also been urged to give emergency responders enough space to work.

What caused the crash?

The circumstances that led to the collision have not yet been fully established.

Authorities are expected to investigate the incident and determine how the multiple vehicles became involved in the early-morning collision.

For now, emergency teams have concentrated on saving lives, recovering victims and reopening the affected section of the highway.
