Africa’s AI Revolution Gets a Boost as 26 Projects Win Major Language Grants
Artificial intelligence is changing how people work, learn, communicate and access information. But across much of Africa, there is still a basic problem: many local languages are not well represented in the technology powering that change.
A new initiative is trying to close that gap.
The Masakhane African Languages Hub has selected 26 projects for funding under its LINGUA Africa programme, supporting teams working to develop better AI tools for African languages, dialects and sign languages.
The selected projects cover more than 50 African languages spoken by more than 500 million people across 47 African countries.
Each project can receive up to US$250,000 in funding, as well as access to up to US$400,000 in computing credits.
Why this matters
For someone who regularly uses English or French online, it can be easy to overlook the problem.
But millions of Africans communicate primarily in local languages.
When AI systems do not understand those languages properly, people can struggle to use voice assistants, translation tools, educational platforms and other digital services.
The aim of the new programme is to change that.
Instead of expecting Africans to adapt completely to technology designed around a handful of dominant languages, researchers and developers are working to make the technology better understand Africa's own linguistic diversity.
More than 800 applications
The interest in the programme has been significant.
More than 800 applications from 64 countries were reportedly submitted, with about 85% coming from Africa. From those applications, 26 projects were selected.
The teams include researchers, universities, startups, non-profit organisations and community-led initiatives.
That community involvement is particularly important.
Language is more than words. It carries history, culture and local knowledge.
The technology could have everyday uses
The projects are not simply about teaching computers how to pronounce African languages.
They are looking at practical areas including healthcare, agriculture, education, justice, public services and journalism.
Some teams are developing speech-recognition and text-to-speech systems, while others are working on datasets and AI tools that could make digital services easier to access.
Imagine being able to ask an AI-powered service a question in a local Ghanaian language and receive a useful response without first translating everything into English.
That is the kind of possibility researchers hope better African-language technology can create.
Ghana has a stake in this
Ghana is home to many languages, including Twi, Ewe, Ga, Dagbani, Gonja and Dagaare.
That means the wider African-language AI movement is directly relevant to the country.
Better local-language technology could eventually make digital services more accessible to people who are not comfortable using English as their main language online.
The potential is particularly interesting for voice technology.
A farmer, trader, student or elderly person could eventually interact with a digital service through speech in a familiar language rather than having to navigate an English-heavy platform.
Who owns Africa's language data?
There is also a bigger question behind the project.
As AI companies race to collect more data, African languages are becoming increasingly valuable.
But African researchers and communities need a say in how that information is collected, developed and used.
Masakhane has been pushing for African-led research and more open, culturally grounded language datasets.
That approach could help ensure that African communities are not simply providing data for technology built somewhere else.
Africa doesn't have to wait for the AI future
For years, the conversation about technology in Africa often centred on whether the continent could catch up with developments elsewhere.
The language-AI movement presents a different possibility.
Africa can also build technology around its own needs.
The 26 projects will not solve every challenge overnight. Developing reliable AI systems for dozens of languages requires time, quality data, computing power and sustained research.
But the investment is an important step.
For millions of Africans who rarely see their languages represented properly in modern technology, the change could eventually be felt in very simple ways — being understood by a machine, accessing information more easily, or using digital services without first having to switch languages.
And that may be one of the most important parts of Africa's AI story.
The continent is not simply waiting for artificial intelligence to arrive.
It is beginning to shape what that future looks like.
