ACCRA, Ghana — A July 2026 opinion poll has suggested that Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson would enter the 2028 presidential race with a significant advantage over former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia if he is elected as the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer.
According to the poll, Dr. Ato Forson would secure 57.5% of the vote in a hypothetical head-to-head presidential contest, while Dr. Bawumia would receive 35.3% nationally.
Although the 2028 general election is still more than two years away, the findings offer an early snapshot of Ghana's evolving political landscape and voter sentiment.
NDC Dominates Across Most Regions
The survey indicates that Dr. Ato Forson enjoys overwhelming support across the 13 regions won by the NDC in the 2024 general election. These include Ahafo, Bono, Bono East, Central, Greater Accra, Northern, Oti, Savannah, Upper East, Upper West, Volta, Western, and Western North.
In those regions, the poll shows Dr. Ato Forson receiving 63.1% support, compared with 30.6% for Dr. Bawumia, reflecting a strong electoral advantage for the governing party's potential presidential candidate.
Bawumia Holds Narrow Edge in NPP Strongholds
The contest appears considerably tighter in the three regions won by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the 2024 elections—Ashanti, Eastern, and North East.
According to the poll, Dr. Bawumia leads with 46.5%, while Dr. Ato Forson records 43.6%, suggesting that the NPP's traditional strongholds remain highly competitive despite the NDC's broader national lead.
Early Political Landscape Taking Shape
The survey highlights the political dynamics beginning to emerge ahead of the 2028 elections. While the NDC appears to enjoy a substantial national advantage in this hypothetical matchup, the NPP continues to demonstrate resilience in its core electoral base.
Political observers note that public opinion could change significantly before the next general election as political parties elect their flagbearers, launch campaigns, and respond to evolving economic and governance issues.
As with all opinion polls, the findings represent voter sentiment at the time the survey was conducted and should be interpreted alongside details such as the polling organization's methodology, sample size, and margin of error.
