GMet Issues Thunderstorm Alert for Northern and Transition Belts as Heavy Rains Loom

Accra, Ghana – July 5, 2026 — The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued a weather alert, warning that widespread thunderstorms and rainfall are expected to affect the Northern and Transition Belts of Ghana today as an active rainstorm system moves westward from the Nigeria–Benin border.

According to GMet's latest 18-hour weather forecast, the storm is expected to spread across several parts of northern Ghana from mid-morning into the afternoon, bringing thunderstorms and rain of varying intensity. Residents are advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions as weather conditions may change rapidly.

Northern Ghana Expected to Experience the Heaviest Rainfall

The agency forecasts that communities including Tamale, Yendi, Bolgatanga, Nalerigu, Wa, and Damongo could experience the most intense thunderstorms during the day.

Areas within the Transition Belt, such as Kete Krachi, Atebubu, Ejura, and Kintampo, are also expected to receive thunderstorms and rainfall later in the afternoon.

Morning Mist to Give Way to Thunderstorms

Much of Ghana is expected to wake up to mostly cloudy skies, with patches of mist and fog affecting parts of the coastal, forest, and mountainous areas. The reduced visibility is expected to improve later in the morning as temperatures rise.

A few coastal communities may experience light to moderate rain before conditions become more unstable later in the day.

Southern Ghana Also Likely to Receive Rain

In southern Ghana, cities including Accra, Aflao, and Anloga are expected to experience light morning showers, while Takoradi, Cape Coast, Kumasi, and Obuasi are forecast to remain mostly cloudy before thunderstorms develop during the afternoon and evening.

Temperatures Across the Country

GMet predicts maximum temperatures of about 30°C along the coast and up to 35°C across northern Ghana. Minimum temperatures are expected to range between 22°C and 23°C nationwide.

Rough Sea Conditions

The agency has also warned that sea conditions will remain rough throughout the day. Fisherfolk, boat operators, and other marine users are urged to exercise extreme caution to reduce the risk of accidents.

Public Safety Advice

GMet is encouraging residents, especially those in northern and transition communities, to monitor weather updates and prepare for possible thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. Motorists are also advised to drive carefully in areas affected by morning mist and poor visibility.
