"Flooding Will Never End Unless We All Change" – Ga Mantse Makes Passionate Appeal to Ghanaians

Every rainy season, many people in Accra lose their homes, businesses, and valuable belongings to floods. While many blame poor drainage systems, the Ga Traditional Council believes the real solution goes far beyond building bigger gutters.

Following the recent heavy rains that left parts of the capital submerged, the Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has called on all Ghanaians to unite and take responsibility for ending Accra's long-standing flooding crisis.

In a statement released on Wednesday, July 1, the Council said flooding is not only an engineering problem but also a result of human actions. It stressed that illegal construction on waterways, poor sanitation, indiscriminate dumping of waste, and failure to obey planning regulations continue to worsen the situation every year.

The Council commended the Government, Greater Accra Regional Minister Linda Obenewaa Akweley Ocloo, NADMO, Metropolitan Assemblies, and the security services for their swift response to the recent floods. It also expressed sympathy to families, traders, motorists, and residents who have suffered losses as a result of the disaster.

According to the Council, lasting solutions will require stronger law enforcement, protection of drainage channels, improved sanitation, environmental awareness, and close collaboration between government institutions, traditional authorities, religious organisations, businesses, youth groups, and local communities.

The Ga Traditional Council also pledged to use its traditional leadership structures to promote discipline, civic responsibility, and environmental awareness among residents.

The message from the Ga Mantse is clear: ending Accra's flooding crisis is a shared responsibility. Without a change in attitudes and stricter enforcement of environmental laws, the city could continue to experience the same destruction every rainy season.

What Do You Think?

Do you agree with the Ga Mantse that human behaviour is the biggest cause of flooding in Accra, or do you believe government must do more to improve drainage infrastructure?
